The renaissance of Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley – once a hub of machine tooling and leather tanning – not to mention tens of thousands of jobs - could be described as a brownfield redevelopment project on steroids. Over the last decade, crews have cleaned up or contained more than 300 acres of landfill – gradually drawing commerce and jobs back into the corridor.

In a couple of weeks, the United States will commemorate the 150th anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War – the Battle of Antietam. But just a few days before that well-known fight came another significant clash between Union and Confederate forces that would come to solidify the reputation of the Wisconsin soldiers in the Iron Brigade.

Urban Park Designed to Blend Exploration and Education

The first step in creating a combination urban park - science classroom in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley took place Thursday.

Shovels will meet the dirt on property that once was a rail yard, and later became a dumping ground.

WUWM Environmental Reporter Susan Bence learned a great deal of groundwork has gone into the multimillion dollar project, as partners work to blend exploration and education.

Some people HAVE discovered the Menomonee Valley.

Mixing Dogs with Wolves

Humane societies hope to bring down Wisconsin's first wolf hunt.

A group of humane societies will have their day in court Wednesday as they attempt to put a stop to Wisconsin’s first wolf hunt.

It is scheduled to begin October 15. Advocates of the hunt say it’s an appropriate mechanism to control wolves that attack livestock and pets.

The new law allows hunters to use dogs to track and trail wolves.

Those seeking an injunction say confrontations between wolves and dogs could result in the inhumane death of dogs.
