Study: Tighter Gun Laws on Domestic Abusers Could Deter Future Tragedies

Sunday’s mass shooting at a Brookfield salon has prompted some Wisconsin legislators to call for stricter gun laws. Police say Radcliffe Haughton shot and killed his estranged wife Zina Haughton and two of her co-workers at the Azana Salon, then turned the gun on himself. As WUWM’s Marti Mikkelson reports, a national study released today supports several proposals suggested here.

New Health Care Model for Kids Seeks to Better Identify Abuse, Neglect

We now continue our series on Wisconsin’s efforts to improve the health of children in foster care. Child welfare officials admit the existing system is not meeting many kids’ needs. As we reported Tuesday, the children’s health records are often incomplete and scattered among the many caregivers and doctors who’ve passed through the kids’ lives. To address the problem, the state plans to roll out a “medical home” program that would centralize each child’s care. Today, WUWM’s Erin Toner highlights another state initiative – a sharper focus on helping children heal from trauma and abuse.

Local Advocate: Domestic Violence Epidemic in Metro Milwaukee

Perhaps ironically, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to Carmen Pitre, co-executive director of Milwaukee's Sojourner Family Peace Center, "the incidence of of domestic violence is at epidemic proportions in Milwaukee County."

Crowd Reacts With Horror to the Brookfield Shootings

Three women were shot and killed at the Azana Spa in Brookfield on Sunday and four others were wounded. Police say the gunman, 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, then killed himself inside the salon. The parking lot of Brookfield Square Mall quickly filled with people, as news of the mass shooting spread on Sunday afternoon. WUWM’s Marti Mikkelson spent several hours at the scene and spoke with those gathered.

The Freedom Project: Three Exhibits at the Haggerty Museum of Art

A few weeks ago, we told you about Marquette University's unique take on commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The university's year-long "Freedom Project" will take a cross-disciplinary approach to examining the multiple and complex definitions of freedom, in the past and today. As part of the broader Freedom Project, the Haggerty Museum of Art has designed three exhibitions centered on this general theme of freedom.
