Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee

Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee, also known as HPGM, is an organization that has lived in Milwaukee almost two decades and was created to provide professional development for the Hispanic community in Milwaukee.

Today, HPGM continues to carry out that mission, but recently they've been supporting Hispanic students as they obtain a higher education and help to plan even beyond college. There are 11 HPGM chapters on campuses around Wisconsin with more than 900 student members.

Last week, thousands of people gathered to march for A Day Without Latinxs & Immigrants in Waukesha. The first of May is also known as May Day, which is celebrated to honor workers in many countries.

People from across Wisconsin marched to support immigrants' right and in opposition of the 287(g) program that Waukesha's Sheriff Eric Severson applied for last year. This program allows the sheriff to train his deputies as immigration agents; however, the sheriff's model would only be enforced in the county jails.

Washington, D.C. March For Our Lives: Henry Morgan

On March 24, 2018, people across the country marched for tighter gun regulation at "March For Our Lives" events. In Washington, D.C. an estimated 800,000 people gathered. This was all organized by students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after they experienced a school shooting in February that left 17 people dead.

The air filled with chanting of "vote them out," "we've had enough," and "not one more" as the crowd took over Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C. The group included people of different backgrounds and ages, and with different reasons to march.

They’re called Birds of Chicago, but there’s a lot of geography in the group led by Allison Russell and JT Nero. Russell is a Montreal native, the couple lives in Nashville, and they are honorary Milwaukeeans - JT’s family lives here and they spend plenty of time in the area.

Schools across the nation are reacting to inform students, staff and parents about the safety on school campuses following the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sent out a Campus Safety newsletter via email to students and staff with ways to stay safe on campus.

The university offers self-defense training as well as active shooter training, which UWM Chief Police Joseph LeMire says should be mandated.

Meet Sarah Pearson. She helped create the Wisconsin chapter of the Women's March. Before she was leading rallies, Pearson was a restaurant manager.

She says she quit her job to be able to dedicate her time toward something that would make a difference on a larger scale. “Being a part of Women’s March gives me an opportunity to focus on politics and focus on how we as women can use our power to advance social change.”

It was after the 2016 elections that Pearson decided to join in, in advocating for social change.

The United States Senate is again debating competing immigration plans with less than a month remaining before the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program is set to expire. The Trump Administration has indicated it will require the president’s border wall and broader border security measures to be a part of the solution, even as a majority of Americans say they believe the so-called Dreamers here under DACA should receive legal immigration status.
