Amtrak Train Evacuated in Milwaukee After Fire

Mary Spicuzza ‏/ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Milwaukee Fire Department says all passengers made it out of an Amtrak train after a fire in the locomotive.

First responders were notified of the fire in the passenger train just after noon Thursday on the city’s south side near E. Walker and S. Barclay streets. The train was coming from Chicago and headed to downtown Milwaukee.

Passengers were either picked up by friends and family or put on the Milwaukee County bus system to get to their final destination. The 1 p.m. train out of Milwaukee to Chicago was canceled because of the fire.

The incident in Milwaukee comes amid scrutiny of an Amtrak crash in Philadelphia on Tuesday that killed eight people. That train was traveling at 106 MPH, more than double the speed limit.
