This weekend, for the 6th straight year, more than 150 buildings, businesses, and other facilities, will open their doors to anyone interested in looking inside. Doors Open Milwaukee attracts tens of thousands of people to area sites they might not otherwise get to see.
Grace Fuhr is the director of special events for Historic Milwaukee, which organizes Doors Open. She’s says that in addition to the customary downtown sites of the US Bank Building, Federal Courthouse and City Hall, there are new spots to check out, including:
833 Michigan Building: Including guided tours of "Milwaukee's newest skyskraper...it's very beautifully designed."
The Catholic Financial Life Building (formerly Catholic Knights Building): "most spectacular aspect about this building is the eighteenth floor rooftop pool... with incredible views of downtown Milwaukee from the western side."
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church: "they will just be open for one day only... designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the Byzantine style...it's really a beautiful and stunning piece of architecture."
Journey House's 'Packer Practice Field': which the Packers donated, and "one of the days it's going to be completely open so you can go and take your picture next to the green and gold 'G'."
The Tree of Life Earthworks Studio: "truly a hidden gem... a beautiful ceramics studio...participants can contribute to a public art project."
Two new sites in Sherman Park: Washington High School and the Milwaukee French Immersion School.
Fuhr says that the event "fosters a sense of civic pride, and really makes people appreciate Milwaukee for its rich history, culture and architecture."
