Assessing Climate Change's Impact on the Great Lakes

Susan Bence

More than a century ago, the Boundary Waters Treaty established an advisory group made up of representatives from the United States and Canada. Called theInternational Joint Commission, its charge is to attempt to prevent and resolve disputes over the use of the waters shared by the two countries.

One of its latest projects is the study titled, Lake Superior Regulation: Addressing Uncertainty in Upper Great Lakes Water Levels. The study examines the potential future impacts of climate change in order to better anticipate and respond to future extreme water levels.

WUWM Environmental Reporter Susan Bence spoke with an atmospheric scientist who has immersed himself in the impact of climate change on Great Lakes’ water levels.

Dr. Paul Roebber is a distinguished professor of atmospheric science with the UWM Department of Mathematical Sciences. He also founded and administers the forecasting initiative within the Innovative Weather Program.

This fall, Roebber is taking on yet another position – as Associate Dean for Academics for the School of Freshwater Sciences, where is already working with students and scientists.
