Madison's police chief says officers are not responsible for minorities' problems. Protesters demand that police stay out of black neighborhoods.
The Young, Gifted and Black Coalition is making other demands as well, including, that the Dane County Jail release 350 black prisoners and that local leaders halt plans to build another lock-up.
Coalition members plan to rally Tuesday night outside of Madison's City-County Building.
On Monday, Police Chief Michael Koval wrote on his blog that he's tired of demonstrators blaming Madison police for perpetuating racial disparities in the criminal justice system. Koval said he can no longer ignore the rhetoric accusing police of bias, and that it's time for protesters to investigate the issues plaguing minorities.
The coalition has been staging protests in Madison and other cities, decrying the deaths of black men at the hands of white police officers. Members sent the chief a letter last week, demanding that officers stop patrolling city neighborhoods with primarily black residents.
