A marathon session is in store Tuesday for the GOP-controlled state Senate. Lawmakers are scheduled to dispense with more than 100 bills before they adjourn for the years.
The Senate will vote on a measure that would have an impact on Milwaukee, making it tougher for cities to force lenders to sell zombie homes, or abandoned properties slated for foreclosure.
Senators will also take up packages designed to combat dementia and opiate addiction. Some noteworthy items have been left off the agenda. Those include a bill that would allow police officers to check the immigration status of people charged with crimes. Opposition to the plan was fierce, with thousands of immigrant rights activists protesting at the State Capitol in February in the days following passage in the Assembly.
Other bills the Senate left off the calendar include allowing the state to collect outstanding debt for Milwaukee County, lift the cap on tax deductions for student loan interest and increasing compensation for the wrongly convicted. These measures passed the Assembly, but Senate leaders said Monday that many of them carried too high a price tag.
