A 44-story development proposed for Milwaukee’s lakefront got a boost this week.
Milwaukee County’s Economic and Community Development Committee approved selling the county land upon which the Couture would be built.
The mixed-use high-rise would replace the Downtown Transit Center.
Supervisors in favor of the sale say the Couture project will generate economic development, as well as jobs for minorities and the entire community.
Milwaukee County Supervisor Michael Mayo, Sr. says he plans to oppose the land sale. Mayo calls the $500,000 price tag “an insult” to taxpayers. Mayo says the land is prime real estate, which should generate much more revenue if it is sold.
There are additional opponents to building the Couture on the sight of the Downtown Transit Center. The group Preserve Our Parks argues that much of the land in question is land-filled lake bed, which the group says is “inappropriate for such a venture.”
The full County Board is expected to vote on the land sale at its meeting Dec. 18.
