DNR Seeks More Information on Potential Iron Mine

The Wisconsin DNR wants more details from Gogebic Taconite, the company interesting in mining iron ore south of Lake Superior.

The company filed paperwork with the agency last month, in a bid to take and sample rock from five sites in the Penokee Hills. The tests would help determine the quality of the deposits and what would likely be required to remove them.

According to the DNR, the company paperwork, so far, lacks certain information such as:

-- what kind of explosives the operation would use

-- estimates of air emissions

-- anti-erosion and anti-pollution measures

-- wetland inventory

One permit the DNR told the company it does need to obtain, is a storm water discharge permit. Other permits may be needed as well, the agency says it needs more information to decide.
