Ex Fabula: 200 Nights

Art Montes
Storyteller Sue Blaustein

Though 2018 will mark 50 years since the passage of the Fair Housing Act, Milwaukee, the city that started it all, remains the most segregated city in the nation. Since August 28th of this year, the 50th anniversary of the night the Milwaukee Fair Housing Marches began, community groups across the city have hosted interactive, educational events reflecting on our city’s history of racism with where we are today and how far we need to go.

Ex Fabula gives you a chance to be part of the conversation this Tuesday, December 5th, as we host our first Secret Fabula of the season - Secret Fabula: The Housing Marches through the UWM Archives. Explore the history and personal stories of the Housing Marches at this intimate event. Hear personal stories and learn first hand how archival materials can help construct complex narratives. Tickets are free for Ex Fabula Members with a handful of additional tickets available to the public. Tickets include light snacks, storytelling program, and guided small group exercises. Seating is limited so get yours today!

This week’s stories are each profound and thought provoking in their own ways. Sue Blaustein told this story first at our “Only In Milwaukee” StorySlam” in April and we featured in here on WUWM earlier this summer. However, given Sue’s experience of subversive racism in housing and the way she chose to take action and become an advocate instead of a victim, makes this story worth an encore.

Storytellers Elaine Maly and LG Shanklin-Flowers

Meet Elaine Maly and LG Shanklin-Flowers, two friends of a certain age who grew up on opposite sides of Milwaukee. At our May, “Creating a Welcoming Community in Bay View” Fellows, event these two women told a Rashomon noting the similarities of their communities and experiences and shedding some stark light on some very real differences.

Hopefully, these stories will motivate you to visit the fascinating UWM Archives collection of the Housing Marches or, better yet, attend next Tuesday’s Secret Fabula:
