Ex Fabula: My Nemesis

Art Montes

Everybody has one. It may be that third grade bully. It could be the neighbor with the yappy dog. Or maybe it’s simply Wisconsin winter. Big or small, we all have a nemesis - an adversary, opponent, foe.

With our November Story Slam themed My Nemesis, this week’s stories are all about adversaries faced by the storytellers.

Ex Fabula is consistently working to build community collaborationsby leading storytelling workshops for interested groups across the city. During a workshop with Legal Action of Wisconsin, staff lawyer Jamiesue Knowlton shared a powerful story about the invisible nemesis that is mental illness. As a legal aid attorney, Jamiesue has had her share of adversaries. However, after meeting a client with a long history of criminal activity who was convinced that Satan was haunting him, Jamiesue realized that this client’s nemesis would take more than law books and religion to fight.

Our next story takes us back to a time many of us relate to, the grade school bully. At last month’s Crossing Over Story Slam, Jennifer Hoepner shared a very Christmas Story-like showdown with her third grade bully. Jennifer’s “no more” moment led her to stand up to her nefarious nemesis in a way that would make Ralphie proud.

As always, we welcome you to the stage. However, we also welcome you to get involved behind the scenes. As a volunteer organization, we depend on creative, dedicated individuals to help keep Ex Fabula going and growing. If you are interested in getting more involved, visit Ex Fabula online for more details.

Remember. We have the stage. You have the story. Let’s share.
