Gov. Walker is asking for 180 more days, to decide if the Menominee Tribe can develop a casino in Kenosha. He initially had until August 23, 2014.
According to a press release from the administration, it has been gathering economic information and communicating with Tribes, but more is needed. The statement refers to the proposed project as complex because of its potential impact on many areas of the state.
At the onset, the governor set conditions for approving another casino. They include that all 11 tribes in the state agree to the development. Two tribes continue opposing the plan, the Ho-Chunk and Forest County Potawatomi, for fear a new casino would harm their existing gaming halls.
If the Bureau of Indian Affairs grants Walker a six-month extension, he would not have to make decision before the November election. Pressure has been intense, from both sides.
