Speculation about Paul Ryan's future is swirling in Washington, DC. That's because a couple of news outlets are reporting that they've learned that the longtime Wisconsin GOP lawmaker plans to resign -- or not run for reelection next fall.

Politico and Huffington Post both published stories, which predict Ryan could leave Congress after a huge tax bill passes, fulfilling one of his goals.

Ryan responded to the reports on Thursday, refuting them. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump called Ryan to say he'd be unhappy if Ryan leaves Washington.

Christopher Murray of Marquette University's Les Aspin Center for Government says he understands why there's speculation about Ryan's future in the House. But Murray told WUWM that he's unlikely to believe the reports, unless Ryan already has lined up other plans.
