Icicles Hanging from Your House?

Michelle Maternowski

Our fluctuating weather has been perfect, for creating icicles. Warm roofs melt snow, but it can refreeze if it hits colder spots near the gutter.

Home improvement experts say icicles are often a telltale sign of ice dams on the roof, and they can be damaging. They can cause water to back up into a ceiling or wall, bring down gutters or shingles, not to mention form ice the ground below.

The best prevention is regular maintenance - before the snow falls. Steps can include repairing damaged shingles, clearing gutters of debris or adding insulation in the attic.

At this point in the season, you may need to call in the professionals.
