The Koch Marshall Trio: Organ Fueled Grooves of Doom

The Koch Marshall Trio did not stop by the Lake Effect studio to play around. The group, which consists of lead guitarist Greg Koch, his son and drummer Dylan Koch, and Toby Lee Marshall on the Hammond B3 organ, say they came to share their heavy grooves mixed with blues sensibility.

Greg Koch says their brand of rock came together when Dylan nearly begged him to meet Toby one afternoon. Although reluctant to spend his day off "jamming with his son's friends", he says he knew they had something awesome from the first three notes the trio played.

"It was glorious," Koch says. "A lot of my chords and stuff that I've come up with over the years is very B3-centric and kind a gospel [thing]."

The trio now relies on the Hammond B3 to bring together gospel influences with jazz, rock, and the blues in a cohesive instrumental track. The Hammond B3 was particularly popular in the 1950s and 60s, but Koch says Toby Lee Marshall plays the organ in a way that "implies his superhero cape."

The Koch Marshall Trio plays tonight at Saukville Triangle Summer Concert Series where they say the summer evening will be filled with "organ fueled grooves of doom."
