Lesser-Known Knights

Originally published on Fri May 31, 2013 9:19 am

We all know King Arthur's famous Knights of the Round Table, like Sir Galahad, sometimes referred to as the Knight of the Holy Grail, or Sir Lancelot, the Knight of the Lake. But do you know the Knight of Scales, Fangs and Coils: Sir Pent? (Say it aloud a few times.) In this game, host Ophira Eisenberg offers more descriptions of a word or phrase whose first syllable sounds like "Sir."

OPHIRA EISENBERG, HOST:

Let's say hello to our next two contestants: Melissa Crotti and Jeff Levinson.

(APPLAUSE)

EISENBERG: Melissa is a librarian. And for our listeners at home, I will point out, a hot librarian.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: And Jeff is a lawyer and word game nerd. So this is going to be a tight match.

JEFF LEVINSON: And hot lawyer, right?

EISENBERG: Very hot lawyer.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: Very hot word game nerd. So, let me ask you this, Jeff, how's your knowledge of medieval times?

LEVINSON: I attended a medieval dinner on Saturday night, so I'm right there with you.

EISENBERG: Okay. You attended a medieval dinner. Is that a way of - are you fancying up going to Medieval times?

LEVINSON: A friend is writing a book about Medieval Italy.

EISENBERG: Okay, I've had enough of this conversation.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: You're serious.

LEVINSON: I've had enough of it too, so I'm ready to go.

EISENBERG: Okay. Melissa, Medieval times?

MELISSA CROTTI: I've seen a couple of seasons of "The Tudors."

EISENBERG: Perfect.

CROTTI: It's smutty. My knowledge is smutty.

EISENBERG: Smutty. That's going to work out for you. This game is called Lesser Known Knights. Everyone has heard of King Arthur's famous Knights of the Round Table, like Sir Galahad, sometimes referred to as the Knight of the Holy Grail, or Sir Lancelot, the Knight of the Lake. But did you know about the Knight of Scales, Fangs and Coils, Sir Pent?

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: That's the game.

JONATHAN COULTON: You know it's going to be a good game when the audience boos the example.

EISENBERG: I know, exactly. They're groaning. So you probably get the gist of this game. We're going to give you a description or a word or phrase that sounds like it could be a knight because it begins with the syllable "sir." And to make it harder, it won't always be spelled with the letters S-I-R. Here we go. The Knight of the Three Rings.

CROTTI: I'm a vegan.

(LAUGHTER)

EISENBERG: See, this is what your dreams are made of, this kind of knight. This is the knight you would want to save you. The Knight of Giving Up and Cringing in Submission.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

EISENBERG: Jeff?

LEVINSON: Surrendering.

EISENBERG: No, I'm sorry; the answer is Sir Marriage. No, you're right.
