The Lives of Union and Confederate Veterans

Civil War veterans faced many challenges as they tried to return to civilian life – including being mythologized. Dr. James Marten is the author of the new book Sing Not War: The Lives of Union and Confederate Veterans in Gilded Age America, published by The University of North Carolina Press. Marten is a professor of history at Marquette University. He's written and edited more than a dozen books, including The Children's Civil War. He spoke with Stephanie Lecci. You can hear more of their conversation about Gilded Age concepts of manhood as supplemental audio below.
