Mandela Barnes Fails to Unseat Incumbent Lena Taylor

Representative Mandela Barnes says the fight will continue, but with a new candidate who emerges

State Representative Mandela Barnes lost his bid to represent Milwaukee’s sixth senate district in the Legislature. The loss means Barnes is now looking for a new job.

Assemblyman Mandela Barnes was up for reelection, but he decided to forego running and instead challenge fellow Democrat Lena Taylor for her senate seat. Tuesday’s primary wasn’t close – he lost. Still, Barnes told the crowd at his party that the fight for public safety, education and a stronger economy are not over.

“Those just weren’t campaign issues, those are real life issues that people, too many people in the city of Milwaukee are dealing with. Too many people across this entire state are dealing with and we can’t ignore it just because we didn’t get what we wanted tonight,” Barnes says.

Barnes told his supporters that there will be more elections and another candidate will emerge, who can get the job done. Since announcing his bid for the Senate back in April, Barnes consistently hit Taylor on her vote in favor of concealed carry and her support of a proposed mayoral takeover of MPS years ago.
