Marquette University Eliminating 105 Jobs

The Rev. Robert Wild announced Wednesday that Marquette will reduce its employee base by laying off 25 workers, and leaving other positions unfilled.

The university’s interim president says the laid off employees are staff; no faculty members have been affected.

Wild says Marquette will further reduce its payroll by not filling some job vacancies, and not replacing some people when they retire. He says the combined effort will reduce the employee base by about 105 positions.

In a letter to university faculty and staff, Wild says Marquette must take steps to ensure its long-term fiscal health. He says the university has to align operations with “fiscal realities” in order to keep tuition affordable. The letter states: “Although Marquette has operated with positive margins for the past 16 years, they have remained thin.” Wild adds that Marquette is looking for new sources of revenue.

Wild says deans and vice presidents recommended the specific cuts. Those losing their jobs will receive a severance package.
