If you live in Milwaukee in 2015, there’s a chance you’ll see a firefighter at your door, at some point.
The Milwaukee Fire Department is planning to send firefighters to knock on the door of every single-family home and duplex, “to look at their smoke detectors, talk about smoke detectors, and install smoke detectors,” according to Chief Mark Rohlfing.
Rohlfing appeared at the Common Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting on Thursday. He told aldermen eight people have died in fires, so far, this year. Seven of the deaths were in homes without working smoke detectors; the eighth incident remains under investigation.
The chief told council members his department responded to more than 70,000 calls for service in 2013. Only about 10 percent were for fires; most were for emergency medical services.
