Mining Protester Released on Bail, Governor Urges Calm

A mine protester charged with theft has been released on a signature bond.Katie Kloth of Stevens Point is charged with robbery by force and other misdemeanor counts stemming from a protest at the Gogebic Taconite mining site near Mellen June 11. The 26 year old made an initial appearance in court Monday. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker says he hopes "cooler heads will prevail" at the mine site. Walker says he believes local law enforcement is capable of maintaining order at the site. Gogebic Taconite earlier hired masked and armed guards to protect the company's equipment and personnel. However, the guard unit was disbanded temporarily while the company seeks the state licenses needed for security firms. The company says it will re-instate the guards once the proper paperwork is finished.
