MPS Board Approves Sale of Former Malcolm X Building

The Milwaukee School Board has voted to sell a former middle school on the city's north side to a developer, not to an interested private school. The former Malcolm X Middle School would be sold to a developer for $2.1 million under the plan the MPS Board approved Monday night.  The vote authorizes the MPS administration to ask the City of Milwaukee to conduct the sale.  The city owns the buildings the school district operates.

A spokesman for MPS says the district has been seeking a buyer to redevelop the property into a multi-purpose community facility for years. A nearby private school, St. Marcus Lutheran has been interested in purchasing the former building in order to add a second campus and claims MPS will not agree to a deal because it fears competition for students.
