Milwaukee police say the incident started around 7 A.M. Monday, when the man tried to get into the passenger door of a car at a nearby intersection.

Investigators say the man fired a shot at the vehicle when it pulled away. The driver summoned police and told them where the suspect had fled. Officers say they found him inside the Milwaukee County Transit Center near the lakefront and ordered him to drop his gun. When he refused, they shot and killed him.

Police say the suspect had been carrying a semi-automatic handgun.
