Skills Gap, or Training Gap?

All this week, we’re talking about what many have described as the “skills gap” that’s opened up in this country – the disconnect between employers who have job open, many in highly skilled manufacturing trades, and the millions of unemployed or underemployed people in this country.

We hear business and political leaders alike talk about the challenges in finding qualified workers to fill the positions in a rapidly modernizing work environment.

But Peter Cappelli says it’s not really accurate to call it a “skills gap.” Cappelli is the author of the recent book, Why Good People Can’t Get Jobs: The Skills Gap and What Companies Can Do About It. He joins Mitch Teich on the line from Philadelphia, where he is a Professor of Management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
