State officials could check the bank accounts of unemployed people, under a proposal in the state legislature.
The law would also require financial institutions that do business with the state to monitor unemployed people's accounts. Banks and credit unions would be required to report overpayments due to error and disclose information about people who owe money to the unemployment system.
The Joint Finance Committee recently approved a provision in the Governor's budget that would force the unemployed to apply for four jobs a week, rather than two, to retain benefits.
