State Prison Guards Join New Union

Wisconsin prison guards will be represented by a new union following a vote to drop membership in the Wisconsin State Employees Union. The Wisconsin Association for Correctional Law Enforcement will represent the state's 5,900 security and public safety workers following a vote by membership to leave the WSEU. Membership in the state employees union has been dropping since the 2011 state law that ended collective bargaining for most state workers and made union membership optional. The new state law will also require the new union to recertify which means it needs approval of 51 percent of members to remain viable.
