UPDATE: GAB to Spend $400,000 Informing Residents about Voter ID

The campaign is being called, "Bring it to the Ballot". It will include ads on TV, radio and billboards.

The ads and a special website will detail the types of photo identification that will be acceptable at the polls in November and how to get a free state ID. People must visit a DMV office.

The Government Accountability Board has asked the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee to approve an emergency appropriation of $460,000, but the committee canceled its meeting for this past Tuesday.

However, the GAB says finance committee leaders assured the agency that they would personally support its request, so they suggested the GAB spend the money, then submit the bill.

Last week's Marquette Law School poll indicated that nearly 20 percent of registered voters in Wisconsin did not know they had to bring photo identification with them in November. Thousands may still need to obtain an acceptable ID.

The Legislature approved Voter ID three years ago, but courts had blocked it for much of that time. On September 12, a federal appeals court told the state it could enforce the law.
