UW System President Ray Cross is ordering cost-saving moves, in light of Gov. Walker's plan to cut fundingfor the system by 13%, while freezing tuition.
Cross has placed a moratorium on all administrative pay raises, promotions and out-of-state travel, and he ordered all UW System administrators to stop filling non-essential positions.
The Republican governor is facing a potential $2.2 billion deficit in the next two-year state budget.
In exchange for cutting the UW System by $300 million during those two years, Walker would give the system more autonomy from state rules. Basically, the UW Board of Regents would oversee the state university system, a role the Legislature has played.
