Milwaukee experimental rapper, poet, and MC, WebsterX joined Rachel Owens in the WUWM studio this week, talking about his newest single Doomsday (feat. Siren). X got his start at an early age. Last time he visited the WUWM studio, he talked briefly about his childhood. For hours after school X would play basketball with his friends, after which time the group would relax and start experimenting with rap into the evenings. In Nov. 2013, X released his debut album Desperate Youth. It is an exploration in experimental hip-hop/rap, with elements of electronic and jazz music. According to WebsterX, “Desperate Youth is a full expression in sixteen songs to encourage us as youth to pursue whatever the hell we want to do instead of falling subdue to the swirling pressures of today, and to, bang in the whip.” In early Dec. X was crowed the winner of the 2014 Radio Milwaukee Awards “Solo Artist of the Year Award.”
The rapper’s music video for his song, “Doomsday (feat. Siren),” is being shot on Monday, Dec. 22 at Milwaukee’s Urban Ecology Center. The video aesthetic is quite simple. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, a group of “maniacs” will run towards X as he raps, all while sitting in a chair. The “maniacs” are WebsterX’s friends and fans recruited through Facebook and other social media sites.
Doomsday (feat. Siren) is his latest original song released independently, produced by Chants. Doomsday (feat. Siren) is indeed a genre pushing track. “We’re all doomed, we’re all doomed, but it’s not doomsday…,” WebsterX declares in the song, his spoken word intermingled with the soft and hushed vocals of Siren. Both the lyrics and distinctive vocals make for a truly unique listening experience. The song is the second track off his upcoming 2015 sophomore release set for the spring, the first being Renaissance (feat. Lex Allen & D. Bridge).
