Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen the artwork of Peter Max. Max is one of the world’s most famous living pop artists. His bright, bold color palette has applied to depict everyone from rock stars to the Statue of Liberty.
This weekend, Max will be at Gallery 505 in Whitefish Bay to kick off an exhibition of his collected works, which will feature some of his most iconic pieces.
"I've always loved color and always painted with color, so I've always enjoyed it," says Max. "I always enjoy the whole adventure of color."
Tom Harris is the owner of Gallery 505, and a long-time fan of Max's artwork. "Since I was a young boy, I have followed Peter's work ," says Harris.
He worked very hard to get Max's show to come to the area, which he admits is not the largest market for art lovers. Still, he thought it was important to feature Max's work at his gallery, particularly as an artist with such a lengthy career.
Max's work fits into a larger theme of the pieces shown at Gallery 505. "I am attracted to fun, hip artwork," says Harris. "And I love texture and bright colors, and everything that Peter Max does are really pieces that I like. I love the back stories behind why Peter paints... For me it's people who live it, breath it, and feel it, and that's really why I chose to really work to get Peter to come here."
