Wisconsin Lawmakers Take Up Bill That Would Outlaw Certain John Doe Investigations

A state Senate committee will hold a public hearing Wednesday on a measure that would significantly curb John Doe probes for political crimes.

John Does are similar to grand jury investigations, in which information is tightly controlled and gathered in secret.

The bill would prohibit the use of the John Doe process to investigate political wrongdoing.

Since Gov. Scott Walker took office in 2011, prosecutors in Milwaukee have used the process to investigate his aides while he was Milwaukee County executive, and whether his 2012 recall campaign illegally coordinated with conservative groups.
