Wisconsin's AG Democratic Candidates Offer Views on Legalization of Marijuana

None of the three Democrats running for Attorney General said they would advocate for the legalization of marijuana in Wisconsin.

Assemblyman Jon Richards says the state should wait to see how legalization plays out in Colorado and Washington, two states that now allow the drug's sale, before deciding what to do in Wisconsin.

Jefferson County District Attorney Susan Happ says it might make sense for Wisconsin to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes, but she would not become involved as an advocate.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne says the issue of legalization is up to the Legislature, not the AG's office.

The three Democrats met in a debate on Tuesday, before UW Madison law students.

The winner of the August 12 primary will face Republican Waukesha District Attorney Brad Schimel, in the November 4 election.

Current Att. General J.B. Van Hollen, a Republican, is not running for a third term.
