UWM Chancellor Discusses Sustainable Peacebuilding Degree and a New Greenhouse

Beginning in fall 2014, UWM will offer an interdisciplinary professional graduate degree program leading to a Master of Sustainable Peacebuilding.

Chancellor Mike Lovell discusses the new program plus fills us in on a new 9,200 square foot greenhouse on the roof of one of the former Columbia St. Mary's Hospital buildings which is now part of the UWM campus.

Impact Obesity Has On Our Psyche

Nobody wants to be overweigth, but it is a fact that many of us are carrying around more pounds than we should. Studies show that more than one-third of U.S. adults are obese. The number of children who are overweight is even greater among some population groups.

While we know there are serious physical risks to being overweight, on this edition of UWM Today we talk about the impact obesity has on our psyche.

How Estrogen Protects Memory

Host Tom Luljak talks with neuroscientist and UWM Professor Karyn Frick about her work in identifying estrogen's role in maintaining memory.

Frick's work has shown that estrogen has a beneficial effect on the brain's hippocampus, which deteriorates with age or Alzheimer's disease.

Ultimately, she hopes to find a way for women to take estrogen in midlife to stave off age-related memory loss -- without the health side effects.

UWM Submits Prospals for the Incentive Grant Program

Wisconsin's biennial budget included more than $11 million for an incentive grant program for the University of Wisconsin System to distribute in 2013. The grant will be used to develop programs to foster economic development, improve affordability of post secondary education and the development of an educated and skilled workforce.
