The parents of a 13-year-old Milwaukee boy fatally shot by an elderly neighbor have won a civil judgement against the convicted killer, John Spooner.

Spooner suspected the boy had burglarized his home, so he confronted and shot the teen in front of his mother.

A Milwaukee judge on Friday awarded $1.2 million to Patricia Larry, mother of Darius Simmons, and $300,00 to the boy's father, Darius Simmons, Sr.

However, since the state caps such damages at $500,000, the judge appropriated $400,000 to Larry and $100,000 to Simmons.

The Milwaukee man who shot and killed 13-year-old Darius Simmons in 2012, will head to prison - with no chance of parole.

People across the country took to the streets Saturday, in support of Trayvon Martin, and to urge federal officials to bring forth charges. Milwaukee was among more than 100 cities where people participated.

Around a thousand or so people gathered in front of the federal building downtown. While the catalyst was last week’s verdict in the George Zimmerman trial in Florida, it was clear the rally here was about more.

It took a Milwaukee jury only minutes Friday, to decide John H. Spooner was mentally competent when he shot and killed 13-year-old Darius Simmons in 2012.

A Milwaukee jury on Wednesday convicted a 76-year-old man of first-degree homicide. John Spooner shot and killed his 13-year old next-door neighbor last year, after accusing the teen of stealing guns.

A Milwaukee jury has found John H. Spooner guilty of first-degree intentional homicide, for shooting to death 13-year-old Darius Simmons. Now the court must decide Spooner's mental state.

The mother of the 13-year-old victim of John Henry Spooner testified at Spooner’s trial on Tuesday.
