Wisconsin soon could see a big increase in funding for mental health services.

With election day coming up next Tuesday, education activists on both sides of the aisle are anticipating the outcome of one of the biggest races - that for state superintendent of public instruction.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments for and against the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which the Obama Administration has declined to defend.  A ruling on DOMA could impact federal benefits for same-sex couples.  The Proposition 8 case before the court yesterday could have a broader impact.  The justices could use it to rule on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage – though they signaled hesitation to issue such a broad determination.

The sequestration deadline is today. Most lawmakers are at least uneasy about the across-the-board cuts totaling $85 billion, but negotiations to avoid them have been difficult. Democrats are reluctant to change entitlement programs. Republicans oppose new tax revenue.

As President Barack Obama begins his second term on Monday, taxes and the economy are sure to be key issues. At the end of the year the country dodged the so-called “fiscal cliff.” But another round debt ceiling talks looms in the near future.

The presidential election is less than a week away, and foreign policy: America’s place, and role, in the world, will be a key part of the job for whichever administration takes office in January.

We hear about a wiener of a children’s book about a presidentially named Dachshund. Mequon children's book writer Barbara Behm is the author of Mr. Lincoln Goes to Washington, published by Xlibris. It's illustrated by Milwaukeean Ellen Anderson, and it was given an honorable mention in the 2011 Writer's Digest Awards program.
