Which bathrooms should transgender students use? That question drew scores of people to Wisconsin's State Capitol on Thursday.

They testified on a bill that would forbid transgender students from using the bathroom for the gender with which they identify. The same would hold for locker rooms.

The transgender community has been gaining a lot more visibility recently. Celebrities such as Laverne Cox are starring in series roles, and the original Amazon series Transparent took home several Emmys for its depiction of an older father coming out as transgender.

However, transgender youth have not been in the media spotlight. This is true in Wisconsin school districts as well. There currently are no numbers for how many transgender students are in the state because there is no official way of collecting this data.


Yesterday, a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel profiled three Wisconsin veterans with a story that’s not often heard.  They’re transgender veterans, who each served and were discharged honorably.

LGBTQ representation in the media has been gaining significant ground in recent years on TV shows such as Orange is the New Black, Transparent, Modern Family, and with the very public spotlight on Caitlyn Jenner. However, while representation grows, it does not cover the full spectrum of the LGBTQ culture.
