For the first time in nearly three decades, a cheese from the U.S. has won the World Championship Cheese Contest.

The Grand Cru Surchoix is made by Emmi Roth USA, a company based in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. It was proclaimed the best cheese in the world in a contest held earlier this month in Madison.

"It just kinda goes to show how hard it is to compete at this stage and win," says Robert Frie, director of operations at Emmi Roth USA.

Wisconsin may be the land of cheese, but even local cheeseheads would likely draw a blank at the mention of a "cheese dinner."

Names such as Gruyere, Brie, Parmesan, Havarti, Feta, Asiago, Gorgonzola and Fontina.

Shawna Morris of the U.S. Dairy Export Council says the European Union does not want cheese makers in other parts of the world using names that originated in Europe. Otherwise, the EU claims, the brands are not authentic.

Morris says the EU began imposing restrictions on cheese branding in the mid-1990s and American companies aren’t the only ones targeted.
