Bill Would Change How Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shootings

A state lawmaker says outsiders should be involved in investigations, when police shoot and kill someone, or a suspect dies in police custody.

Republican state Rep. Gary Bies intends to introduce a bill requiring police departments to include representatives from outside agencies in their investigations. The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Bies was motivated by public concern over the death in police custody of a Milwaukee man, Derek Williams, and fatal officer-involved shootings in Madison and Kenosha.

Meanwhile, a Democrat, state Rep. Chris Taylor, also is working on a related bill. It would require a more independent review of officer-involved shootings.
