For the past 40 years, the University of Milwaukee’s literary journal, Cream City Review, has been publishing stories, essays, poems, reviews and artwork from around the world. The journal is run by volunteers and receives almost 4,000 submissions a year.
Past contributors include literary luminaries like Adrienne Rich, Charles Bukowski and Audre Lorde. The journal has a digital presence, but still publishes a hard copy biannually, which both the current managing editor Mollie Boutell and editor-in-Ccief Loretta McCormick think is vital.
Boutell and McCormick, along with other volunteers, sift through thousands of submissions to find those special stories, poems or art that have the ability to touch to any reader.
"There’s something so special about that moment when I read a story where I just know. We have to have this, it’s so beautiful," says Mollie Boutell.
TheCream City Poetry and Fiction Reading, featuring Amelia Gray Randall Horton, and Kyle Minor, happens Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room Lounge of the UWM Student Union.
