Thirty years ago, Milwaukeean Thallis Drake decided that the city needed an organization devoted to presenting the best of early music, or medieval, Renaissance and early Baroque music.
The first group that the newly createdEarly Music Nowpresented 30 years ago was Sequentia, and it's the same group that will perform for their30th anniversary concert on Saturday, November 19 at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Wauwatosa. The program is called “Monks Singing Pagans: Medieval Songs Of Gods, Heroes, and Strong Women.”
While many associate early music with styles like Gregorian chanting, early music actually came in many different styles. "There was pop music, there was dance music, there were work songs, there were love songs, there were political songs and philosophical songs and every imaginable kind of creation was existing at that time just as it does today," says Ben Bagby, founder of Sequentia.
