This weekend Milwaukee opens its doors for a unique peek inside some of the city’s most historic and unique architecture, while enjoying educational tours and entertainment events. Ex Fabula will be joining the Doors Open Milwaukee line-up with a non-competitive, curated StorySlam all about Milwaukee.
With this in mind, this week we’re featuring stories about influences: how our surroundings, communities, and even the books we read influence our decisions and who we become. We reach back to the 2010 archives for a sampling of our Guerilla Slams.
Our first story comes from Amy Schleicher and our “High School Confidential” themed Guerilla Slam, held at Bradford Beach. Amy spent her early years living in a small, affluent, and mainly white town in Iowa. However, her family was concerned with diversity and social justice - so much so, that when they moved to Milwaukee, her parents chose to settle in a predominately African-American neighborhood, with Amy enrolling at Marshall High School. Amy shares how those experiences helped shape how her world view.
Our second story comes from an unnamed woman we met at the Fondy Farmers Market during our Guerilla Slam themed “Comfort Food.” While she remembered growing up with Grandma’s cooking and homemade Mac n’ Cheese, she shared that her life-long love affair with fresh fruits and vegetables won out. Today she fights for a new “food revolution.”
