The past few months have been exciting for Milwaukee bandSoul Low. Just a few weeks ago, the group released it's newest EP, titled Sweet Pea, and were featured on Spin magazine's "Five Artists to Watch in May" list.

Together since 2009, Soul Low is comprised of Sam Gehrke (bass), Jake Balistrieri (guitar and vocals), Sean Hirthe (saxophone and keyboard) and Charlie Celenza (drums).

The band mates say Milwaukee has played an integral role in the upbringing and character of the group, including being influenced by a multitude of local bands - John the Savage, The Fatty Acids and Sat. Nite Duets.

"Milwaukee has a super diverse music scene. Everyone kind of knows everyone. Everyone performs with everyone," Gehrke says. "I think you...end up taking a little bit from everything...whether you want to or not."

Much of Soul Low's latest increase in hype is due to the release of their newest EP, Sweet Pea. The nine track EP showcases the band, and contains a track featuring Milwaukee rapper Lorde Fredd33.

In terms of the style of the EP, Celenza says, "getting more minimalist was never (the goal)...as long as it matches our emotions and our intensity...we know we can be passionate about what we're playing."

Ahead of Soul Low's busy summer with a full slate of gigs around Milwaukee, here are a few songs performed live at WUWM:
