The Milwaukee Film Festival includes a whole series of films with Wisconsin themes or made by Wisconsinites. That includes a film called From Mass to the Mountain, which features the environmental work of a priest from Ripon, dubbed Padre Pablo by the people he helps in Panama.
People who go to that movie will also see a short film made by Marquette filmmaker Joe Brown, called Operation Wolf Patrol: Wildlife Policy in Wisconsin.
Brown, an environmental documentary filmmaker, moved here in 2013 and took a job teaching at Marquette University. "I knew at that point in time there was a lot going with wolves. They were hunting wolves in Wisconsin at that point," he says. "So, I knew I could make a pro and con film about wolf hunting."
"And then I came across the activist Rod Coronado and immediately kind of thought, geez this guy is a really interesting character. He has a controversial past, he spent time on prison for eco-sabotage. At that time, he was starting a campaign to try to end wolf hunting in Wisconsin and in other states," Brown explains.
Brown found following Coronado, the founder of Wolf Patrol, turned out to be much more compelling.
