"The Surface" opens tomorrow at the Marcus North Shore Cinema and Marcus Menomonee Falls.

The Surface is a drama about two men, both at a desperate point in their lives, who have a chance encounter on Lake Michigan.

Last year, Lake Effect's Mitch Teich spoke with the team shooting the movie, starring Sean Astin, in Milwaukee.

Now, nearly two decades after it was first conceived by Milwaukee writer Jeff Gendleman, the film is set to open Friday at select Marcus Theaters.

The film had its world premiere at the recent Milwaukee Film Festival, and just before that showing, the film's producer Jeff Gendleman; director Gil Cates, Jr.; cinematographer Jimmy Sammarco and actor Chris Mulkey all spoke with Lake Effect's Mitch Tiech.

They discussed the many challenges of depending on mother nature for a good shoot, along with the long road the movie has taken from concept to screen.

"Shooting on the lake [was] extremely challenging...I remember being out there and I would turn to Jimmy and I'd be like, 'man, how could anyone shoot a movie on land and think that's hard?'" Cates says.
