Lights, Camera, Soul Showcases Young Artists in 'Emergency'

This weekend, a relatively young performing arts organization will present the play Emergency at a relatively unusual venue: theBody and Soul Healing Arts Center on North 48th Street. The group, Lights, Camera, Soul, is working to provide performing opportunities for young artists.

"We noticed that there's so much untapped potential in Milwaukee, these people that have the talent. They're very creative, the way they think through things. It's just that they don't have an outlet to express that," says Di'Monte Henning, the executive director of the group. "So that's what Lights, Camera, Soul is all about. We offer opportunities to express your creativity."

The group works with high schooler and young professional actors to bring theater to underserved communities in Milwaukee.

Local actor Derrion Brown is one of the performers in Emergency. He says he first got involved with theater because he thought it would be easy, but found it so rewarding that he pursued it far beyond his initial high school class.  Henning hopes his program will allow other young Milwaukeeans in that same way, by bringing the experience to their own neighborhoods.

"I remember we went to an event and we looked around and there were no young people there, there were no young people," says Henning. "So we try to go outside of downtown, and bring them downtown."
