Though the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra has been playing since 1956, its Community Partnership Programs didn't begin until 2003. The Progressions program, an intensive string training for middle school students, has helped put the orchestra on the map.
Earlier this week, the White House honored the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra with one of twelve National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. The awards recognize outstanding arts and humanities programs that are distinct from those offered by schools.
It was a big deal for MYSO and the member who traveled to Washington, Malik Johnson.
MYSO executive director Linda Edelstein, who accepted the award on behalf of the organization, says the purpose of these programs is "to provide these kids with same kind of access that other students throughout the community may have."
