More new construction is coming to Milwaukee’s near west side. A new athletic research facility will be built on four city blocks bordered by Michigan Street, north 6th Street, 10th street and the Marquette Interchange. The project is a partnership between Marquette University, Aurora Healthcare and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Marquette University’s President, Mike Lovell, says the university is excited to join the building momentum of new construction in downtown Milwaukee.
“When you think about that part of the city it really is adjacent to our campus and to have the opportunity to acquire 12 and a half acres adjacent to campus is really a once in a lifetime opportunity when you’re in an urban setting like we are,” says Lovell.
The research facility is expected to cost more than $120 million and should be a boon to both Marquette and the Milwaukee Bucks, whose new arena will open around the same time. Lovell is hopeful that the partnership with Aurora Healthcare and the Milwaukee Bucks will attract new talent to the university and help build new academic programs. The new center facility could make Marquette a national destination for athletic research.
“The whole idea behind what we’re trying to accomplish here is having researchers from a lot of different disciplines and from a lot of different parts of the country to partner with us and do some unique things,” says Lovell.
