Milwaukee Children's Choir Perform 'Songs of the Unsung Heroes' for Veterans Day

Milwaukee Children's Choir

Next week is Veterans Day, and there are a number of commemorations scheduled, from the annual Veterans Day parade to memorials and observances.

The Milwaukee Children’s Choir will present a special concert in honor of veterans.  “American Homeland: A Veterans Day Concert” is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.

What was originally a one-time concert last year has expanded into a tour visiting soldiers stationed at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, Rockford, Illinois and Arlington Heights, Illinois.

One important theme Melendez incorporated into the music selection is that the songs are not strictly patriotic songs. Most of the music is dedicatory music towards the military to "capture more of the dedication and of the honor that our military holds and should have rather than the bombastic patriotic kind of music," Melendez explains.

Melendez looks forward to the experiences he and the choir will share traveling and singing for this concert. He stresses the importance of the new perspectives the children will gain from visiting and singing for veterans from all walks of life.

"It’s important for them to understand that not everybody comes back hunky-dory," says Melendez. "We need to honor all vets to help them out, no matter where they’re at, lifting their spirits through song."

The Milwaukee Children’s Choir will present “American Homeland: A Veterans Day Concert”this Sunday afternoon at 3 at the Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church at 84th and Center Street on Milwaukee’s west side.
