Besides passion and drive, filmmakers need money to finish, and even start, projects.
Milwaukee Film recently announced its Brico Forward Fund. The idea behind the fund is to encourage local filmmakers to submit story treatments for new movies. As many as five treatments will then be chosen and awarded a significant financial jumpstart.
"This is our effort to provide some funding opportunities to keep film as a vital part of the creative and economic community in Milwaukee, because frankly we need someone to tell our stories or share stories with us," says artistic and executive director of Milwaukee Film, Jonathan Jackson.
In the fund's first year, a prize pool of $50,000 in cash and over $75,000 in donated production services will be awarded to three to five projects selected by an outside jury.
"We're making a choice to give it to one or two, or three to five people. It's not being spread out over hundreds of people because frankly there are hundreds of filmmakers in Milwaukee. But we want to aspire big, and bold, and great with this program," says Jackson.
Milwaukee Film is hosting a workshop focused on the Brico Forward Fund this Saturday for filmmakers to learn more about the fund and how to apply.
